Series V: Flexibility provision from buildings and electromobility
Join us for the PATHFDNR virtual lunch talk series!
Across focused talks, researchers from the SWEET-PATHFNDR consortium will share insights into how electric vehicles and heat pumps can support Switzerland’s energy transition by providing flexibility to the electricity system. The talks will cover flexibility from a system, market, policy and end-user perspective, offering practical recommendations to energy stakeholders across sectors.

Impacts of electric vehicles and heat pumps flexibility:
European and Swiss perspectives
Jared Garrison from Swissgrid (formerly ETH Zurich) will present the assessment of the achievable benefits of utilizing flexibility from electric vehicles and heat pumps in Switzerland, considering both national and international perspectives.
Date: Wednesday, 27 August 2025
Time: 12:00 – 12:45 (incl. Q&A)

Registration: registration is not required (free event)

End-user flexibilities for electrical distribution grid planning
Yaman Evrenosoglu from ETH Zurich will present how electric utilities can anticipate and prepare for a future with high shares of distributed generation, electric vehicles, and heat pumps. The presentation will demonstrate how unlocking electric vehicle, heat pump, and photovoltaic flexibilities can impact distribution grid planning, using the flexibility-aware grid planning methodologies.
Date: Friday, 5 September 2025
Time: 12:00 – 12:45 (incl. Q&A)

Registration: registration is not required (free event)

Modelling flexibility from electric vehicles:
where, when, why, and how
Siobhan Powell and Maria Parajeles from ETH Zurich will present their work on the use of electric vehicle flexibility from a centralized system perspective. The presentation will explore on where and when electric vehicle charging flexibility can be used, why it matters for electricity system planning and operation, and how it can be quantified and activated to support Switzerland’s energy transition.
Date: Tuesday, 21 October 2025
Time: 12:00 – 12:45 (incl. Q&A)

Registration: registration is not required (free event)

Modelling flexibility from heat pumps:
a bottom-up approach for Swiss buildings
Curtis Meister from HSLU will present a bottom-up assessment of the shiftability of heat pump loads in Swiss buildings, in particular through utilization of thermal inertia of buildings.
Date: Tuesday, 18 November 2025
Time: 12:00 – 12:45 (incl. Q&A)

Registration: registration is not required (free event)

Electrification, flexibility or both?
Emerging trends in recent Swiss and European policy
Adrien Mellot from ETH Zurich will provide an overview of recent European and Swiss policies for electrification, with a focus on the links between sector coupling and demand-side flexibility policies.
Date: Tuesday, 13 January 2026
Time: 12:00 – 12:45 (incl. Q&A)

Operation and market mechanisms: from dynamic electricity tariffs to day-ahead and intraday auctions
Christian Winzer from ZHAW will present the design and impact of dynamic grid tariffs. Thomas Hübner from ETH Zurich will discuss how both new and establish flexible resources can offer their flexibility more efficiently through day-ahead and intraday auctions.
Date: Tuesday, 24 February 2026
